Amethyst is a beautiful purple variety of the common Quartz crystal. Its violet color is created through natural irradiation, traces of iron and titanium, or the presence of other elements.

Its name comes from the Greek αμεθυστoς (amethystos). The Greeks believed that the stone would protect its wearer from becoming drunk from wine. Today, however, we use it for entirely different purposes.
