Amethyst is a beautiful purple variety of the common crystal Quartz. Its violet color is created through natural irradiation, traces of iron and titanium, or the presence of other elements.

Its name comes from the Greek αμεθυστoς (amethystos). The Greeks believed that the stone protected its bearer from drunkenness caused by wine. Today, however, we use it for entirely different purposes.
