Amethyst is a beautiful purple version of the widespread Quartz crystal. The purple color is caused by natural radiation, admixtures of iron and titanium, or the presence of other elements.

Its name comes from the Greek αμεθυστoς (amethystos). The Greeks believed that the stone would protect the wearer from drunkenness due to drinking wine. Today, however, it is used for completely different purposes.
