The red inclusions resemble drops of blood, which is why this mineral is called Bloodstone.

Heliotrope has a long and rich history. Albert the Great called it the "stone of Babylon" and attributed magical properties to it.

Pliny the Elder mentioned several times that the first "sorcerers" used it as a stone of invisibility.

Damigeron wrote that this mineral could summon rain, while also believing it held special powers for divination and preserved youth.

Christian tradition says that the red spots appeared during the crucifixion of Jesus, while the Romans believed the mineral could stop bleeding.
