The Magical Cleansing Cedar

While cedar might not be as well-known today as white sage, the spiritual world has known and used it for thousands of years. Traditionally, cedar smoke was used to cleanse temple doorways — protecting spaces from negative and unwanted energy by preventing its entry.

Today, we primarily use it for regular energetic cleansing of spaces. It's considered an element of protection, not only clearing a space but also preventing further intrusion of unwanted elements. We can also cleanse ourselves with cedar smoke. When we pass the smoke along our body, it creates an energetic barrier between our being and external negative influences.

Instructions for Use

Light the cedar gently and slowly over a flame. We recommend using a candle flame. Direct lighting with a lighter isn't recommended as it can introduce unpleasant odors. We want the lighting process to be natural, as it was done thousands of years ago.

When lighting cedar for the first time, allow a small flame to form. Importantly, don't blow out the flame. Native Americans believe that blowing out the flame releases and extinguishes part of your soul. Instead, hold the cedar vertically (with the flame at the top) and let it naturally extinguish before it begins releasing its pleasant and deeply relaxing aroma.

If the flame doesn't extinguish on its own, wave it gently through the air to let the wind put it out.

Energetic Space Clearing

Walk through your space with the smoldering cedar, making slow circles as you move. This helps prolong the ember's life.

We recommend holding a small dish under the cedar with your other hand to catch any falling embers and prevent damage to objects in your space.

To cleanse a space of negative energy and protect it from further unwanted elements, walk with the smoking cedar through all corners of the room, gently wrapping the space in smoke. Don't forget the corners where negative energy tends to accumulate. Then place the cedar in a fireproof dish and let it extinguish naturally.

Don't worry, the cedar won't burn completely — you'll be able to use it multiple times.
