One of Labradorite's most famous legends tells the story of the beautiful colors "trapped" within this stone. According to ancient lore, the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis were long imprisoned within the stones along the coast of Labrador, Canada. One day, an Inuit warrior came upon these trapped lights and struck the stones with his spear. This action released the Northern Lights, but some of their light and energy remained forever captured within the stones.

Labradorite later received its name from this very coastline.
