Amethyst is a beautiful purple variety of the common Quartz crystal. Its violet color comes from natural radiation, traces of iron and titanium, or the presence of other elements.

Its name derives from the Greek αμεθυστoς (amethystos). The Greeks believed that the stone protected its wearer from drunkenness while drinking wine. Today, however, we use it for entirely different purposes.
