If you've ever toyed with the idea of tuning into the messages the universe is sending you, you've probably already found yourself drawn toward tarot or oracle cards.
Tarot and oracle cards carry deep messages. If we open ourselves up to them, they'll show us something we perhaps already know somewhere deep inside — something that simply hasn't yet made its way to the surface.
And yet, when people ask me which is better — tarot or oracle cards — there really is no right answer.
So what are the key differences between tarot and oracle cards?
Oracle Cards
Oracle cards are known for their "freedom" and open interpretation of meaning. Oracle card decks vary enormously from one another, which means everyone can find something that feels right for them. The number of cards in different oracle decks also varies.
The illustrations and messages on the cards are framed more broadly, helping you find answers to life's bigger questions. They offer wider, more open-ended responses and are less structured than tarot.
When choosing between decks, the variety is truly vast. Not only do the themes differ, but the messages can vary greatly too.
You can choose from crystal oracle cards, cards centred on specific messages or quotes, cards with moon phases as their core element, or even "entrepreneurial" cards.
Oracle cards are wonderful for anyone who wants to embrace free interpretation and a more open-ended approach to reading cards.

Tarot Cards
Tarot cards, unlike oracle cards, have a more defined structure and come with more established conventions. That said, they are still very much open to creative interpretation.
Most tarot decks contain 78 cards, regardless of the deck's iconography or approach. Similarly, the meanings of individual cards remain largely consistent from deck to deck.
Every tarot deck contains two "sub-decks" — the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana generally speaks to larger life changes, while the Minor Arcana touches on smaller shifts in everyday life. Together, the two arcanas form a complete story and layered message.
Tarot cards are wonderful for those who prefer a more unified approach to reading, with a little more structure to work with.

How Do I Choose What's Right for Me?
When it comes to choosing between tarot and oracle cards, there's no winner. Much like with crystals, the choice comes down to feeling.
What is it that draws you in?
Which cards are calling to you?
Follow your instinct — it always tells the truth.
Card Reading Can Be Creative Too!
If you can't decide on a specific deck, that might be a sign that two decks are calling to you at once.
You can actually combine decks during a reading. Many people begin with oracle cards, which serve as an orientation — a direction for the reading to follow.
They help reveal the central questions the reader is seeking answers to.
Tarot cards then often act as a "complement" to the starting point established by the oracle cards. They offer a more detailed look into a predetermined theme and help clarify unanswered questions.
