Aquamarine is a remarkable variety of the mineral Beryl, distinguished by its beautiful sky-blue colour. This light blue hue comes from Fe2+ ions, which make the crystal particularly fascinating.
The earliest written record of this extraordinary stone dates back to around 400 BCE, where it was found in Greece. Yet there is already evidence that various peoples were using the stone more than 2,000 years before that.
