Amethyst is a beautiful violet variety of the widespread Quartz crystal. The violet colour develops through natural irradiation, the presence of iron and titanium, or the influence of other elements.

Its name comes from the Greek αμεθυστoς (amethystos). The Greeks believed that the stone would protect its wearer from the effects of drinking wine. Today, however, we use it for quite different purposes.
