Amethyst is a beautiful purple variety of the widely known Quartz crystal. Its purple colour forms through natural irradiation, traces of iron and titanium, or the presence of other elements.

Its name comes from the Greek αμεθυστoς (amethystos). The Greeks believed the stone would protect its wearer from the intoxicating effects of wine. Today, however, we use it for entirely different purposes.
