The Tree of Protection and Cleansing

Juniper is a versatile, low-growing tree used today in the making of drinks, boxes, and carving knives. Many people don't know, however, that long before ancient peoples discovered these everyday uses, they declared juniper the "tree of protection and cleansing."

The Indigenous peoples of the Americas would take a sprig of juniper with them on long journeys for protection. It was believed to guard them against negative influences and harm. Juniper water was also used in the ancient spiritual cleansing ritual known as the "sweat lodge," where water was poured over hot stones to create purifying steam.

Today we use juniper sprigs as incense. They are meant to protect the space around us, preventing negative influences from entering our lives. This herb is especially well suited for those who struggle with feelings of anxiety — juniper creates a safe space, full of protection.
