An old legend tells that the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, were for a long time caught in the rocks along the coast of Labrador in Canada. One day, an Inuit warrior came along, saw the trapped lights, and struck the rock with his spear. This act freed the Northern Lights, though some of the light and energy remained in the stones forever.

Labradorite then took its name from that very coastline.
