Lapis Lazuli — a beautiful crystal of deep blue, it looks every bit the royal stone. And its appearance is not far from the truth, especially when it comes to the earliest chapters of its history.

Lapis Lazuli was first mined as far back as the 7th millennium BCE. Even then, it was used exclusively by those of the highest rank — kings, queens, priests and healers. It was also used in the funeral mask of Tutankhamun.

It was also the source of one of the most beautiful and prized pigments — ultramarine — favoured by celebrated painters throughout history.

Today the stone is more widely available and especially popular among crystal collectors.
