Nephrite Jade is one of two mineral varieties of jade. Nephrite jade belongs to the family of calcium, magnesium and iron-rich amphibole minerals — tremolite and actinolite. In the vast majority of cases, Nephrite Jade appears in shades of green and grey, and occasionally in yellow, brown or white.

Its use stretches back to prehistory, where it was primarily crafted into decorative objects and amulets; before the Common Era, its hardness also made it a practical material for tools.

The Māori of New Zealand call Nephrite Jade "tonga", meaning treasure — and they treat it as nothing less. Since 1840, this special crystal has been protected within their territory. It is widely believed to carry magical power, which is why jewellery and amulets made from it are passed down from generation to generation.
