Onyx is a distinctive variety of the mineral Chalcedony. It is found in a range of colours, though the most common is black with white banding.

It has been in use for a very long time — it was already exceptionally popular among the ancient Egyptians, who used it to craft bowls and other everyday objects. The Romans also wore this special mineral, believing it would instil in them the courage needed to prevail in battle.

Since then it has appeared across many cultures, and remains much loved to this day.
