Candles have held a special power since time immemorial, across every culture, tradition, and era. Our ancestors used them, as did countless other civilisations — and they have stood the test of time, because we still use them today to create a particular atmosphere or as part of our rituals.
From the very beginning, candles have been associated with transformation and with forging a connection to other worlds or to the universe.
Transformation, through the heat, light, and fire that reshapes and changes everything it touches. And connection to other worlds or unseen forces — because candles illuminate every dark corner. We light candles in memory of those who have passed, or to bring a warmer energy into our homes. And who could deny that they truly bring something magical to our everyday lives?
Ritual Candles and Colours
The colour of a ritual candle plays an important role. Each colour carries its own purpose, and so different candle colours take on different roles in our rituals.
Black: Protection, removal of negative energy
White: Peace, energetic purification, connection
Red: Love, passion, releasing fear
Orange: Intention-setting, success, self-confidence
Pink: Love, friendship, forgiveness
Dark blue: Wisdom, new beginnings, emotional wellbeing
Light blue: Peace, family, calm
Purple: Meditation, spirituality, opening the third eye
Green: Abundance, success, heart healing
How to Use a Ritual Candle?
Anyone can incorporate candles into their rituals, regardless of their knowledge or experience with spiritual practices. Candles bring together all four elements: earth (solid wax), fire (the flame), water (liquid wax), and air (the candle's smoke). This union of elements is central to ritual work, whatever branch of spiritual practice you follow.
The most straightforward way to work with candles involves _ simple steps:
- Set your intention. What do you want to call into your life? Let it be one specific intention.
- Choose your candle colour based on that intention. If you're seeking protection, reach for a black candle. If you want to set an intention around a specific goal, go for an orange or green candle.
- Find a quiet space and cleanse it energetically. You can use crystals, incense, or moon water for this.
- Connect with your candle and give it the intention you've set. It helps to close your eyes and visualise your goal.
- Place the candle in a candle holder or a small bowl filled with sand so it stands upright. Light it with your intention in mind.
- Watch the flame and visualise your goal. You can also meditate alongside the candle or weave in another ritual if you like.
If You'd Like to Deepen Your Practice …
You can bring different incense, crystals, or other tools you already use into your ritual.
For an even deeper effect, you can also "engrave" your intention into the candle using a sharp object.
You can combine the candle with small pieces of herbs as well. Coat the candle in oil and dust it with a herb that aligns with your intention. For protection, you might use white sage; for love, rose; for harmony, lavender — and so on.
If through your practice you discover a routine that feels especially right for you, feel free to adapt the ritual and make it your own. Follow your instinct — it never lies.
